What Happens When We Die?
At some point, almost everyone asks this question. Sometimes it comes after losing someone we love. Sometimes it comes late at night, when we can’t stop thinking about it. It’s one of the most important questions we can ask, and the Bible doesn’t leave us guessing.
Death is real, but it isn’t the end
The Bible is honest about death. It calls death an enemy and acknowledges the pain and grief it brings (1 Corinthians 15:26). But it also tells us that death does not have the final word. God created us for life with him, and he has made a way for that life to continue beyond the grave.
Jesus changed everything
Jesus died on a cross and, three days later, rose from the dead. His resurrection is the center of the Christian hope. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (John 11:25, KJV). Because he lives, those who trust in him will live too.
What happens to those who trust in Jesus
The Bible teaches that when a follower of Jesus dies, they go to be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8, Philippians 1:23). Jesus told a man dying beside him on the cross that he would be with him in paradise that very day (Luke 23:43). Death is not a lonely passage into the unknown. It is a homecoming.
This is not the final chapter
Being with Jesus after death is wonderful, but it isn’t the end of the story. The Bible promises that one day Jesus will return, the dead will be raised, and God will make all things new (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, Revelation 21:1-5). There will be no more death, no more sorrow, no more crying, and no more pain. God’s people will live with him forever in a renewed creation, with resurrected bodies, fully alive.
Every person will stand before God
The Bible also teaches that every person will one day give an account to God (Hebrews 9:27). That can feel frightening, but God does not want anyone to face that day without hope. None of us can earn our way to God by being good enough. Instead, God offers forgiveness and eternal life as a gift to anyone who turns to Jesus and trusts him (Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9).
How do I know where I stand?
You can know. The Bible says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9). It’s not about having every answer or a perfect past. It’s about trusting Jesus with your life, now and forever.

If you are grieving
If you’re reading this because someone you love has died, we are so sorry. Grief is not a sign of weak faith. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend (John 11:35). Christians grieve too, but we grieve with hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). You don’t have to walk through this alone.
