How to Find a Church

Looking for a church can feel overwhelming. Maybe you just moved. Maybe you've been away for a while, or you were hurt by a church in the past. Maybe you've never been part of one at all. Wherever you're starting from, here are some things that can help you find a place where you can grow.

1. Start with what they believe
Most churches post a statement of beliefs on their website. Read it. Look for a church that teaches the Bible clearly and points people to Jesus. If something is unclear, it's fair to ask.

2. Pay attention to the teaching
Listen to a few sermons online before you visit, or after your first Sunday. Ask yourself whether the teaching comes from Scripture, whether it's understandable, and whether it helps you apply your faith to everyday life.

3. Look at how leaders are held accountable
Healthy churches don't rely on one person. Find out who leads the church, who those leaders answer to, and how decisions are made. A church should be able to tell you this without hesitation.

4. Ask how they keep children safe
If you have kids, ask whether volunteers are screened and trained, how check-in works, and what policies are in place. A church that takes safety seriously will be glad you asked.

5. Notice how people treat each other
Pay attention to how you're greeted, how people talk to one another, and whether newcomers are noticed. You're looking for a community that is warm, honest, and real, not one that looks perfect.

6. Look for ways to connect
Sunday services matter, but growth usually happens in smaller settings. Ask about small groups, classes, and serving opportunities. These are where friendships form and faith deepens.

7. Visit more than once
One Sunday rarely tells the whole story. Give a church a few visits before you decide. Every church has good weeks and off weeks.

8. Pray about it
Ask God to lead you to the right place. He cares about where you belong even more than you do.
